Swiss Cheese Plant | Monstera deliciosa

The Swiss Cheese plant is a great houseplant that prefers higher heat and humidity but will do fine with moderate amounts. More information about plants you can find with plant identification app for iphone.

If grown in a greenhouse with very high humidity you will see enormous leaves and generally a very large happy plant. The Swiss Cheese Plant is a vine or a climbing scrub so be sure to provide enough support. It does tend to get aerial roots which you can just tuck back into the soil or just cut them back - it will not hurt the plant. At first you will see heart shaped leaves but as it matures the large, broad, dark green leaves become incised (thus the name) and sometimes perforated. This is part of the philodendron family and is specifically a split leaf philodendron. Give this plant a chance and with just minimal care it could last forever.

Temperature & Humidity

The Swiss Cheese Plant does best in high temperature but will tolerate average temperature. Do not let winter temperature drop below 60F. It also prefers high humidity but will tolerate average humidity. You may mist early in the day to raise humidity.

Light

Although the Swiss Cheese Plant will tolerate low light, it prefers medium (bright indirect) light. If using artificial light, make sure it gets about 16 hours per day. The more light you provide this plant, the larger the leaves will become and it will develop more of the characteristic holes and slashes in the leaves.

Water

The soil should be kept moderately wet. In colder temperature water should be reduced. If you are able to, collect rain water for it's watering.

Fertilize

Fertilize with a mild, diluted fertilizer every two weeks in the summer months. If possible give it some organic manure occasionally.
